Bárbara Dória

Born in Porto (Portugal), she studied at Conservatório de Música do Porto and Escola Superior de Música do Porto with Maria Teresa Xavier and Pedro Burmester where she graduated with the highest awards and honors.  She was a pupil for 10 years of the Portuguese pianist and pedagogue Helena de Sá e Costa, having received First Prize from all National Piano Competitions and subsequently her studies abroad were sponsored by the Gulbenkian Foundation and Luso-Americana Foundation. Masterclasses of renowned pianists such as Dmitry Bashkirov, Maria João Pires among others were important references in her development as a musician.

Since 1990 she studies with Dmitry Paperno in Chicago and at Indiana University (Bloomington-U.S.A.) with Lev Vlasenko, Leonard Hokanson and Menahem Pressler where she received her Master’s Degree, Performer Diploma and Artist Diploma in Piano.  Afterwards became one of Leon Fleisher’s pupils at Peabody Institute in Baltimore.  Bárbara had chamber music coachings with Yo-Yo Ma, Franco Gulli, Gyorgy Sebok and Janos Starker.

After her solo debut at the age of 16, Bárbara has performed in all major Halls and International Music Festivals in Portugal as well as with the main Symphonic Orchestras of her country under the direction of Christopher Bochmann, Jose Ramon Encinar, Meir Minsky, Christian Pfitzner, Marc Tardue and Cesário Costa.  Performances in Austria (Mozarteum Salzburg), Belgium, Cabo-Verde, U.S.A., including TV and Radio recordings are already part of her career.

As a result of her strong interest in chamber music she had the privilege of being invited by the world famous cellist Janos Starker to collaborate in a recital in Portugal.

Bárbara Dória has given piano masterclasses in Portugal and taught as Associate Instructor in Piano at the Indiana University in Bloomington for two years.

From 2001 to 2003 Ms. Dória was teaching at E.S.M.A.E Piano and Chamber Music.

Schools such as Conservatório de Música do Porto, Instituto Piaget in Mirandela and Almada, Academia de Música de Viana do Castelo and Academia de Música de Paços de Brandão were institutions where she worked.

 Currently she integrates the staff of Escola de Música de Perosinho.
